Art is Abnormal

Dear Friends,

We’re excited to share that our gallery will re-open on June 3rd! In this new abnormal, I’d like to share with you some thoughts on our future.

Because we cannot gather more than 10 people at a time (according to science), we are pivoting to a continually evolving and rolling exhibition. Each time you come to visit, we will be installing/deinstalling/curating and changing what is on our walls depending on which pieces have found a home and what’s being created by our artists.

Like the 17th and 18th century salons of France, we’ll be gathering small art groups of creatives (artists, poets, writers, patrons, etc.) and host curated bi-monthly meet ups over the next year. If you are interested in joining our salon, please e-mail info@kailinart.com and you’ll be put on our list.

In regards to visiting the gallery, we will provide disposable face masks, hand sanitizer at both entrances, QR codes for price lists, and printed lists upon request. We strongly suggest you call the gallery to schedule a visit so that we can plan out hourly visits for private viewings of art.

The gallery has always been a breathing, living reflection of contemporary art and our place in time. Art has never been normal and in these abnormal times, we hope that our gallery brings beauty into your lives, inspiration into your homes, and a semblance of happiness and light into your soul.

In gratitude,
Yu-Kai Lin

Our current time

Dear Atlanta Community,

We are in an extraordinary time right now with all that is happening in our world of flux and uncertainty. The well-being of our art team and collectors, artists and patrons is our top priority so we have decided to limit the spread of the Coronavirus by closing our gallery until it is safe to reopen.

This decision was not made lightly as we are still just a small business at the end of the day. We hope you will remember to continue to shop local, shop virtually, support boutiques, restauranteurs, and the stores that make Atlanta Atlanta.

We will be extending our CreateHer exhibition featuring 39 female artists which you can preview the artworks below. As always we are still offering curbside pickup for to-go orders to artful patrons that want to enjoy beautiful, original art. Give us a call and we’ll bring your piece upon arrival :)

If you are interested in any of the artworks, please reach out at 404 408 4248 or info@kailinart.com for availability.

In gratitude,

Kai Lin Art is pleased to announce our first exhibition for 2020 : IMAGINE exhibiting from January 17th through March 6th. IMAGINE is a four artist group exhibition that features the works Greg Noblin, Elliston Roshi, Stan Clark, and Kevin Palme.

The artwork of IMAGINE encompasses a diverse range of mediums and techniques with the underlying themes of imagination through childhood impossibilities and daydreams (Greg Noblin), imagination of abstract expressionist universes (Elliston Roshi), imagination of storytelling and folklore (Stan Clark), and imagination of fragility and impermanence through the exploration of ice cubes (Kevin Palme).

This latest body of work by Greg Noblin delves further into childhood memories of imagination. The narrative of his storybook scenes conjure up ideas of elation, connection, and whimsy. Using textures to create a sense of nostalgia, Noblin incorporates the stitching of gridded panels divided into even squares then reconstructed into a whole image. The result is a meshing of the artificial with the organic. The animals in his series act as a contemporary allegory for the viewer’s imagination.

Elliston Roshi returns to the gallery with this collection of a re-imagination of the ancient idea that an image floats in multiple spaces simultaneously. Each work of art is a shadowbox of the space between the viewer and painter, foreground (glass) and background (gesso panel), the macro and micro worlds of natures elements. The result of the organic with the geometric pigmented shapes and fluid movements result in a transitory state of flux. Elliston explores a range of colors and interplay of forms creating a symphony of dappled space, an imagined expression of abstraction.

Stan Clark explores the connection between memory, storytelling and imagination with this new body of artwork. Using heavyweight sheets of rag paper, like pages torn from a giant storybook, Clark recasts well-worn allegories from literature and folklore into a contemporary light. From pop-graphic interpretations of Greek Mythology and freshly animated illustrations of Oscar Wilde’s fables, recognizable settings and landscapes are reimagined as both familiar and otherworldly. Lustrous views of Georgian wilderness are rendered in neon-violet tones while luminous impressions of cityscapes are depicted in a series of overlapping impressions like the dazzling firework displays.

Ice painter Kevin Palme returns to the gallery to explore the impermanence as our only constant. We live in a world defined by change at every turn from mundane daily occurrences to seasonal transitions of birth and death. For Palme, painting feels permanent. A tower of ice cubes is, of course fragile and impermanent. It is a structure designed to fail and in doing so return to a prior state. While earlier iterations of the ice cubes were black and white, color has played an increasingly important role in the work encouraging new ideas and interpretations of the subject matter to emerge. Color imbues the work with a sense of history and ambience. Each palette carries a memory with it, creating opportunities for dialogue, remembering, and imagining possibilities.

The Art of Marc Boyson

Marc Boyson, through the intuitive trace, exposes in the act of mapping moments of passage. These delicate ink line drawings on paper are an accumulation of time collected to reveal as whole the meander of his hand.

These trace drawings derive from invention through the process of remembering journeys down gridded city streets, winding country roads, and hikes throughout his life. As images of these memories flow through Marc's mind, they translate into the line wondering across the plane of the paper. These renderings become a passage from memories into the visible an Intuitive Dérive.

Marc Boyson reveals the cartographic trace through his commutes by using memory, invention, and by GPS records. Through works on paper, projection, murals, sound and ceramics he reveals the sublime in the banal of his movement through space. He is an Associate Professor of Fine Art at the School of Visual Art & Design, Southern Adventist University in Collegedale, TN. Marc exhibited in Radiate exhibition at Kai Lin Art in Atlanta, GA in 2018. He received Best in Show award at the AVA Juried Members Exhibition at the Association for Visual Arts, Chattanooga, TN in 2016. Boyson had a solo show There to Here… Reprise at John C Williams Gallery, Collegedale TN. Marc Boyson graduated with a MFA in Studio Art: Ceramic in 2013 from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA.

The exhibit will run through Friday, November 15th. Hope to see you by the gallery!

The Art of Larry Jens Anderson

PASSAGE :: Larry Jens Anderson

As I age the concept of passages takes on more profound meanings.  Personally there is my body changing and illnesses, realizing that the passage of time brings me closer to death, friends and family are dying and artistically my ability to perform takes on new relevance.  None of this is new to the world, but personally I feel threatened as I try to work through the doubt.

My youth was free of the gun violence that seems pervasive today.  Overlapping the contemporary attitudes to guns and being homosexual means I am part of a target group.

Going to school or a concert, a church, a synagogue, a bar, used to be innocent, safe and now are tainted by the fear of dying.  I use camp humor, art history, religion as devices to communicate. Religion is curious with its bedding with groups such as the gun lobby and then also being a target.

From 1970-76 I taught high school in Goddard, Kansas. A year after I moved from Goddard to Houston, Texas, Goddard Junior HIgh fell victim to the first school shooting. One of the track coaches I worked with was shot in the leg and several individuals were killed. What seems like an anomily has now become too common. Going forward the youth of today will have more complex passages to figure out.

The Art of Hannah Adair

My work is about the tactile, sensual body and abstract inner experience. This body of work is inspired by the mythological figure Lilith. She is the first woman, before Eve, who is exiled from the Garden of Eden for refusing to be subordinate to Adam. Using this narrative as a starting point, I am approaching the subjects of sexuality and the monstrous feminine with a sense of humor and play.

The Art of Steven L Anderson

Steven L. Anderson’s work is about the power of Nature, and the nature of power. Alone and collaboratively, and across several media, Anderson engages in projects that look to nature as an evergreen source of metaphors for how we experience the world. Anderson’s artistic goal is “to make images, things, spaces, and situations that fuse the exhilaration of the human spirit with the ferocious beauty of Nature to make a palpable, tingling essence.”

The Tree Rings artworks are a way of growing a drawing: the artist draws circles with markers and pens that closely follow the circle before it, expanding as the rings build and bring the form into existence. Titled after the number of rings/years, these meditations on growth and the passage of time hope to provide a larger context for our lives. Where would our own activities, lifespans, and histories fit into the recordings made in tree rings? These drawings are at once a violent death, a time machine, a hypnotist’s tool, an energy vortex.

The exhibition will run though November 15th
