SPENCER HERR

My work transposes historic icons and artworks to highlight the finer and often overlooked narratives contained within. Frequently using text and layers the paintings are presented in carefully assembled yet sometimes chaotic combinations to tease the context to the surface. Often employing the use of text bubbles the work gives a critical voice to the culture these figures defined. Art is given a certain degree of authority by asking the viewer to not question it. This work asks us to dig deeper into the moral lessons art history has offered us.

Spencer Herr (American, b. 1974) is a contemporary american painter best known for his use of traditional realism, pop culture iconography, and text.
